OOC: Well, the lack of a result is certainly...undramatic...

Since both combatants failed their tasks, neither achieves a positive result.

The younger Apellan lunges with his blade and, somewhere in the flurry of action, appears to have allowed it to continue on its path once his body and hand reached their intended destination. The blade's trajectory carries it between Cole's arm and side and in a downward arc to the ground, where it clatters ineffectively. Both Cole and the Apellan look at each other, then the knife, then each other again.

OOC: I'm going to have the Apellans retain the initiative by spending 2 Threat.

The older Apellan, though he was able to get a strike in against the trained "warrior," decides that it wouldn't be advantageous for him to remain in the fight. He uses the distraction of the craftsman's blunder to make a quick getaway, and runs to the door at the far end of the room, he flings it open and moves through in haste.

OOC: Back to you folks. A security guard is able to act in each location. Who wants to take it?

I feel bad. My guards don't have names, only numbers....

That said, once the door is gone, what do we see, so I can try to decide what the uninjured Specialist #1 does?

OOC: Thanks for the reminder. I forgot to follow up on the post describing the vaporizing of the door.

The area behind the erstwhile door is a small chamber, barely wider than the stairway itself. The door on the opposite wall is barred on this side, and appears to also have a padlock securing a hasp that holds the wooden bar in place. This door is designed to keep someone or something in.

Let's see...Dhall moved up to zap the door, and Specialist #2 is down. Taking a minor action to adjust his phaser to wide beam...wait. I'm away from my books. How does wide beam work in this game?

OOC: The Charge quality on phasers includes the "Area" Damage Effect. This allows you to also hit a single character in Reach of the initial target, and a number of characters within Close Range of the target (in order of proximity) equal to the number of effects rolled. Complications means including an ally in the beam, and no target that would be more difficult to hit than the original target may be included in the beam.

OOC: We really should name our guy too. Any thoughts Doug?

Patrick Goodman

Specialist Vasquez will take a minor action to adjust his phaser to wide beam in hopes of getting all the Apellans behind them at once. In game terms, I am invoking the Area affect in the belief that I'm I'm going to be successful.

Totally up to you, Steve. You're the boss. We're been calling them Specialist Jimmy (watching our backs) and Specialist Tommy.
"Plus who is going to be consoling Sorak there?"

"The commander raises a valid concern," Sorak replied with his usual aplomb, "As you can see, I am beside myself with worry."

Patrick Goodman

Guess I should roll damage for Mr. Vasquez....

We need deuces and a 5 or 6....

I've already invoked the Area effect. Since I rolled two Effects, can I also invoke Intense?

OOC: Using Charge to create the Area Effect, aye.

2 Successes vs. Difficulty 2. Success!

Charge only allows you, with the Prepare Minor Action (which I forgot about and we'll just assume Vasquez performed), to choose one effect. Since there are no other Apellans available to target with that second Effect, it's just lost.

4 Damage rolled, plus 2 Effects. You'll need to spend 1 Momentum to score an Injury and knock them out.

Gents, maybe all of our unnamed security guards should be pulled from the Colonial Marines in Aliens. :) We have Vasquez, so there's Hicks, Hudson, Apone, Drake (appropriate), Frost, Ferro, Spunkmeyer, Dietrich, Crowe, & Wierzbowski.

If we use Drake, we could make her one of the youngest of the ship's namesake's 4th great-grandchildren.

Actually, I mentioned the minor action for setting wide beam; I thought that there were two Apellans behind us. No biggie; I just wasn't sure if I could do two things or not; I didn't think I could, but I had to try.

Spending 1 Momentum to reroll those threes.

And nice pick-up on the name....
