Davy, aka GM

Kowalski stops and scans ahead. He swears he saw something move in the rocks to the right. He tells the others to stand by and takes a step forward. The specialist sees the flash and smoke from a musket, followed almost immediately by the crack of the shot.

Kowalski instinctively dodges right, but isn't prepared for the second shot that immediately follows.

OOC: With the ambush, the Apellans will take the initiative to start the skirmish.

Spending 2 Threat to counter the Turning Tide Complication. These elite warriors are unfazed by the greater fortunes of the battle.

#1022
OOC: 6 damage, plus 4 effects, for a total of 10 Stress to Kowalski. He takes an Injury for taking 5 Stress, and takes another Injury for being reduced to 0 Stress.

This is a crucial moment for Kowalski. If he doesn't avoid the first injury, the second will kill him immediately. You folks can either choose to spend 2 Momentum (or add 2 Threat) to avoid it, or create a Complication for Kowalski to avoid it. How do you want to proceed?
"Course, sir?"

"Out there...thataway."

Nolmir

OOC: Ouch! We don't have a shortage of Momentum, so I don't see a problem with spending 2 for Kowalksi.

Patrick Goodman

Concur. Spend 2 Momentum to avoid the first injury.  Take a Complication to avoid the second.

Davy, aka GM

OOC: He can only avoid one injury at a time, and would have to succeed on a Recovery task to be able to avoid another. He has no choice but to take the 2nd Injury. Avoiding the first just mean he isn't instantly dead.
"Course, sir?"

"Out there...thataway."

Patrick Goodman

Ah. Misunderstood there. I think spending the Momentum to keep him from dying is the way to go.

OOC: Since we have 3 (Steve chimed in over FB Messenger) votes to save Kowalski, I'll move forward with that.

The round slams into Kowalski's body an instant after the crack is heard; a mist explodes through the upper left quarter of his torso, and the petty officer goes down in a heap where he stands.

OOC: Okay, you folks can now act. Who is up? So far, only "r" and "v" have presented themselves. They have 2[CD] of cover. The others have 4[CD] of cover.

OOC: Fun Fact: The image I used for the map is an overhead map view comes from the area around the Iverson Movie Location Ranch, where several westerns were shot. (I liked the look of the two rock formations better than anything I could find around Bell Ranch and Chatsworth Peak, where "A Private Little War" was shot.)
"Course, sir?"

"Out there...thataway."

Renny

OOC: Given that one of Cole's values is "The safety of the crew is my top priority", i'd like Cole to run forward to reach Kowalski and provide cover for him.

Renny

OOC: I guess he'll use his minor action to move and then render first aid with the task.

Davy, aka GM

OOC: I'll allow you to take a point of Determination by invoking "The Safety of the Crew..." against Cole, since he's running out into the line of fire to stabilize his crewman.

You have two choices on how this affects you:

1. Your Difficulty to perform First Aid on Kowalski is raised to 2, or
2. The enemy's Difficulty to attack you this round is decreased to 1.

Pick your poison, Renny.
"Course, sir?"

"Out there...thataway."

Renny

OOC: I'll take the increase to Difficulty on the 1st Aid roll. I can mitigate this whereas if Cole gets hit, then he's not going to be able to help Kowalski so that would seem the better choice.

Davy, aka GM

OOC: Okay, Daring + Medicine vs. Difficulty 2, then.
"Course, sir?"

"Out there...thataway."

Renny

OOC: Can I spend my point of determination to buy an extra D20 in this situation?
