Two positive influences, one negative influence
Rolled 2d20 : 10, 14, total 24

Let's see what happens....

Sorak
Captain, Starfleet
Captain of Engineering and Portmaster, Eridani Shipyards

47-year-old Vulcan male (b. 09 January 2242 (Terran calendar), Ta'Vistar, Vulcan)

Department: Operations
Traits: Vulcan, Tu-Jarok, Teacher

ATTRIBUTES

Daring - 8*
Fitness - 9
Insight - 8
Presence - 8
Reason - 10

DISCIPLINES
Command - 3*
Conn - 2
Engineering - 4
Security - 1
Science - 3
Medicine - 1

STRESS: 10

FOCUSES
Composure, Cybernetics*, Power Systems*, Computers*, Chess, Warp Engines

VALUE
Logic is the key to understanding*
There are multiple ways to resolve a problem*
Talking is preferable to fighting (future)
Logic and emotions are not mutually exclusive*

TALENTS
Mind Meld* - Melding of minds through physical contact. This will always require a Task with a Difficulty of at least 1, which can be opposed by an unwilling participant. If successful, you link minds with the participant, sharing thoughts and memories; Momentum to gain more info.

Nerve Pinch* - The nerve pinch counts as a melee weapon with 1 Intense, Size 1H, and the Nonlethal quality. You may use Science or Medicine instead of Security when attempting a nerve pinch Attack, and may increase damage by your Science or Medicine Discipline instead of Security.

In the Nick of Time* - Whenever you succeed at an Engineering or Science Task as part of an Extended Task, you score 1 additional Work for every Effect rolled.

Rocks Into Replicators* - Once per session, you may destroy any single piece of equipment to create any other piece of equipment of an equal or lower Opportunity Cost. This new piece of equipment has a Complication range increase of 2, with the Complication being a malfunction that renders it useless. You should provide a reasonable explanation as to how a repurposed or cannibalized device could function and the Gamemaster has final say if there is any question about the "reasonableness" of the new device.

Introduced: 1.3; Featured: 1.4, 1.5, 1.6, 1.7, 1.8, 1.9, 1.10, 1.11, 1.12, 1.13, 2.01, 2.02

NOTES
Height: 195 cm  (6'5")    Weight: 90.7 kg (200 lb.)     Eyes: Black     Hair: Black

General Description: Tall and thin, Sorak has a very professional appearance. He keeps his hair trimmed in the standard Vulcan style and his uniform is surprisingly immaculate, given his profession.

Personality: Sorak seems to be the archetypal Vulcan at first glance, but as one gets to know him, they see that he is somewhat more in touch with his emotions than the average Vulcan. He will occasionally make a joke or crack a subdued smile, but all within the framework of his logical approach to the world. He values his privacy as much as any other Vulcan, but can also be social with those he has come to know well.

Background: Sorak comes from a long line of officers and investigators in the V'Kor, Vulcan's police force, but at an early age his skills in the sciences set him apart from the rest of his family. Logically, they sponsored his application and applauded his acceptance to the Vulcan Science Academy at age 18 in 2260. While attending the Academy, Sorak was introduced to the Way of Jarok (Tu-Jarok) by one of his professors and began the quest to understand and integrate emotions in moderation into the logical lifestyle of a Vulcan scientist.

Following his graduation from the VSA in 2264, Sorak took a position in theoretical physics research, where he worked for 12 years. He found the experience intellectually fulfilling, but something was missing. It wasn't until the return of the USS Enterprise from her historic five-year mission under Kirk that Sorak began considering the satisfaction that could result from applying his physics knowledge in a practical, as opposed to theoretical, manner. By 2276, he had joined Starfleet as part of the fast-track officer training program leading up to the expansion of Starfleet's exploratory efforts in the early 2280s.

Sorak's first assignment was almost literally trial by fire when he was assigned as an engineering officer to the USS Pendragon, a destroyer patrolling along the Klingon border. By the end of his six-year assignment in 2282, Sorak had proven his worth as an engineer, been promoted to Lieutenant, Junior Grade, and improved his skills in the use of the Vulcan nerve pinch.

His next assignment was to the USS Saratoga, a Miranda-class cruiser on an exploration mission. In 2284, Sorak was promoted to Lieutenant and Chief Engineer of the starship. He served aboard the Saratoga during the Probe Incursion of 2286 and found a new emotional experience in the frustration that resulted from being rendered helpless and adrift by the probe.

Soon after returning to starbase, Sorak was reassigned to the Drake as Chief Engineer. A post he was proud to accept. He served on the Drake until her decommissioning and had, by that time, been promoted to both First Officer and Chief Engineer. Positions he continued aboard the ship's successor, a Constellation-class cruiser, along with a promotion to full Commander.

Following the Drake's visit to Vulcan in 2289, in which the crew was instrumental in thwarting an attempt on his father's life, Sorak accepted a transfer to 40 Eridani Shipyards as Captain of Engineering.

OOC: Just for clarification, the target number for Reputation checks is your current Reputation score.

Another thing, here: Treyva has some discretion in allocating his own Reputation gains to the crew, which take the form of additional d20 the subordinates roll for their own Reputation tasks. So, don't record your gains or losses just yet, until Treyva's Reputation task is resolved.

Okay, so, 0 Successes vs. Difficulty 0. Technically, you can't "fail" a Reputation roll of Difficulty 0; however, I'm going to give you the Complication penalty, so your Reputation potentially drops by 1 point, to 9. Somebody wasn't impressed with Voshen's flying...or, maybe it was the blatant deception so poorly executed in the main sanctuary... ;)

Unfortunately, 0 Successes vs. Difficulty 0. This means a loss of 1 Reputation for failure, and 1 for each die that failed to score a Successes, for a potential total loss of 3 Reputation, to 7. This was a rough stretch for Cole...it's quite possible the sectarian focus (it was a shame, leading Tobin astray like that...), attacks on Spalan and N'Varas, and his using SFIC authority to bypass Starfleet Intelligence restrictions reflected poorly on his leadership of the department.

2 Successes vs. Difficulty 1. Success, plus 1 point of Reputation increase, to 14. Clearly, the stigma of sectarian focus was placed upon the Security Chief, who should "know better" and keep the Science Officer out of such trouble. ;)

I'll resolve Chev's task as soon as he can post his roll.

OOC: Looks like two successes!

For Tobin's milestone, I'd like to do the following:

Normal Milestone effect: Nothing jumps out here. I think I'll save this one for later.

Spotlight Milestone effect: Swap in the Cautious (Science) Talent for Studious. He got a bit headstrong on wanting to take Kavoran down, and Spunkmeyer's near-death shook him enough to be more cautious in the future.

Arc Milestone effect: I'd like to add a Focus. How about Encryption? Useful both for encrypting messages and understanding how to decrypt messages, computer systems and the like.

Hi. Can't think of anything for Cole to do with his milestone at the moment.

Reputation Roll - Roll 2d20 vs Difficulty 1

Voshen feels pretty confident in his piloting skills this mission, but thinks that he could've been more useful during the investigation itself.  He had a lot of opportunities to see and gather data, but didn't have the follow-through to act on it.

He'll use his Spotlight Milestone to trade his 'Dauntless' Talent for 'Quick Survey':

"You have a way of getting a good impression of a situation with only a moment's observation. At the start of a scene, you may immediately ask one question, as if you had spent one Momentum on the Obtain Information Momentum spend. The answer can only provide information that you could obtain with your own senses; you cannot gain information from equipment in so short a time."

With the Normal Milestone choice, he'll sidegrade his 'Gambling' Focus for 'Cold Reading'.  Taking his lessons from long nights at the poker table and applying them to the frustrations of not being able to read Kavoran at the interrogation.

OOC: Okay, first call for Reputation rolls.

Also, is anyone doing anything with their milestones? (Especially Nolmir, since Tobin has an Arc advancement.)
#50
Tobin
Quote from: Nolmir on December 01, 2024, 02:06:11 PMTobin completes his half of the gesture. "You've always had excellent judgment, my jia'ta vay dorun'shee*." He grins. "It seems you always know what is best long before I have realized it myself."

"And you are my heart," T'Kalla responds gently. "Even logic must give way to it."

The couple hold their gesture for several moments, eyes locked until they suddenly become aware of another presence nearby. They look over to find T'Vaana-Sath watching them with a raised eyebrow...

Cole
Quote from: Renny on December 01, 2024, 04:48:54 PMCole is somewhat taken aback by this invitation, knowing that Vulcan's are reluctant, as a rule, to allow humans in particular to observe thier family life and interactions.

"I would like that very much", he replied simply.

Sturm provides Cole with the family address and invites him to arrive at sundown, and the trio take their leave and depart the courthouse.

Voshen
Quote from: socrates200X on December 02, 2024, 07:49:12 PM"Doctor, once again, I find myself in your debt.  I apologize for my misattention.  With the investigation and the excitement at the monastery...well, it wasn't the breathtaking introduction to Vulcan scenery I was expecting."

"Well, you survived the experience to make more work for us." Despite the flat tone, Voshen thinks the doctor is joking, potential confirmation coming in the form of the slightest twinkle in the Tellarite's eye. "Report to Kasey in sickbay as soon as you're done here. Mention that I need him to give your apparatus a once-over. And try to stay out of massive sandstorms for a while..."

Chev
Quote from: Chev ch'Valk on December 03, 2024, 12:11:17 PM"...I'm trained as well; my Ushaan-tor is back on the ship. Maybe we could do some sparring some time!"

"That would be a welcome distraction. Find me after supper and we'll set up regular sparring. I'm sure Miguel will accommodate you as Tobin has for me."

Tryeva
Quote from: Patrick Goodman on December 04, 2024, 07:42:43 PM"...I was going to be coming by your office later anyway. With the current situation resolved, I was going to ask for an extended leave so I could go visit my family. It's...been a while since I was home. I'd like to nominate Sorak as acting captain; he's been an exemplary exec. I think you'll find he's more than capable."

Santiago appears to lose a shade of color as Treyva makes his request. The captain recognizes this as one of the commodore's tells when he's about to wade into a subject that makes him uncomfortable. What could be uncomfortable about approving leave-time? Is the Drake about to be sent out?

"I'm sorry, Treyva, I can't approve your nomination," Santiago answers sympathetically. "Mr. Sorak requested an assignment to Eridani Shipyards; I just so happen to have been operating with a string of acting portmasters for the past year, and desperately need someone of his experience and expertise in that role."

The commodore takes a deep breath and sighs. "I've accepted his request, and have assigned him as captain of engineering and portmaster here, effective tomorrow morning. I'm sorry to have to spring this on you - Sorak was hoping to be able to give you the news himself." He looks over at his shoulder, but Sorak and T'Kiri have apparently left the foyer and the building. His eyes sweep toward the floor before engaging Treyva once again.

"You'll need to name your new first officer, which I can approve in Commodore Krane's stead," he continues. "I can then approve your leave and acting captain nomination. See me tomorrow, okay?"

OOC: Okay, gents, we're going to wrap this story up. Please go through the episode and look at potential Reputation influences (Core Rules, p.141), and send them to me via PM on this site. I'll confirm/adjust, and we'll make Reputation rolls.

We'll do milestones after that. Here is each character's milestone for this episode:
Treyva - 9th (Spotlight)
Tobin - 3rd (Arc)
Cole - 4th (Spotlight)
Voshen - 1st (Spotlight)
Chev - 1st (Spotlight)

Once that's done, I'll run a concluding Captain's Log...maybe a short narrative surrounding Tobin being named the new first officer (and acting captain in Treyva's absence)...

...of course, the next episode will have Tobin, Cole, Voshen, and Chev away from the ship...so it'll probably be Lt. DelVecchio or Lt. Kolesnikov in command of the ship 'til Treyva returns.
