Patient (Species Ability)
When you succeed at a task where you purchased one or more d20s by spending Momentum, you generate 1 bonus Momentum for each d20 purchased. Bonus Momentum may not be saved.

Former Initiate
When you spend Determination to buy a bonus d20 on a Control or Reason task, you may also re-roll the dice pool after the roll.

Cautious (Science)
Whenever you attempt a Task with Science, and you buy one or more d20s by spending Momentum, you may re-roll a single d20.

Intense Scrutiny
Whenever you succeed at a Task using Reason or Control as part of an Extended Task, you ignore any Resistance on that extended task.

Testing a Theory
When you attempt a task using Engineering or Science, the first bonus d20 you purchase is free, so long as you succeeded at a previous task covering the same scientific or technological field earlier in the same adventure. If you created a trait that represents a hypothesis about an unknown phenomenon, you may also re-roll one d20 on tasks related to that hypothesis.

Role
Chief Science Officer: When you succeed at a task assisted by the ship's Sensors or Computers, or a task using a tricorder or other sensing device, you may ask one additional question as if you had spent Momentum on Obtain Information.

I'll get started on the ones with my name on them, and the ones most directly connected to Treyva that aren't marked as yet.

Man, we have a bunch of supporting characters....

Supporting Character Conversions

Gents, we have quite a few characters (30!) to convert over to 2nd Edition. I put the list below.

I think, to split some things up, we'll say that, nominally, if the character is in your department (Command for Patrick, Science for Nolmir, Security for Renny, Helm & Nav for socrates, and Communications for Chev), you get first dibs on doing the conversion/rebuild; however, there are a few characters who are legacy characters - either played by or important to certain players. I've put an asterisk by the names of those characters.

Outside that, I'll handle the work for Dr. Dourap, Capt. Sorak (and his family), and Lt. Kolesnikov.

Once we've divvied out the department/legacy characters, we'll look at who's left and break up tasks, so that everyone has a good number to work on.

When you've finished a character, don't post them; instead, send them to me in a PM and I'll create a new thread for 2nd Ed. Supporting Characters.

2nd Ed. Milestones
Very player oriented in 2nd ed. Hard to adapt this...I'll have to think more about it.

After more thought, I strongly object to the concept that player-facing advancement is inherently better than advancement that "happens passively in the background or at the gamemaster's discretion."

We've only completed five episodes using STA, so our advancement of experienced characters was always a bit arbitrary; trying to figure out where the character arcs are within those episodes is extremely difficult.

Treyva has been around for all 15 episodes. Cole for five and Tobin for four. Of course, this last episode is the first for Voshen and Chev.

Trying to link various mission logs will be difficult, but you gents could attempt that. Patrick will have the most difficult time, as 11 of his episodes used Coda. That would be the most "organic" way to rebuild the characters in 2nd edition, though it will likely result in less advanced characters than we started.

Personally, I would prefer to forgo the player-facing advancement and modify the model we've been using since we switched to STA:
No advancement after your character's episode numbers: 1, 4, 8, 13, 19, etc.
Milestones after your character's episode numbers: 2, 5, 6, 9, 10, 11, 14, 15, 16, 17, etc.
Character Arcs after your character's episode numbers: 3, 7, 12, 18, etc.

2nd Ed. Reputation
2nd ed. base Reputation is 3. So, 1st Ed. 10 Reputation converts to 3. So, I still feel 1st ed. Reputation divided by 5, round off. Add 1 works the best:

1st Ed 1-2 = 2nd Ed 1, 3-7 = 2, 8-12 = 3, 13-17 = 4, 18-20 = 5
Also, if you have awards, etc., and they have a direct analog, just add them to your character sheet.

One interesting thought is to try to use your individual past rolls to go through each Reputation roll using 2nd Ed. and apply the results as best you can...however, I'd prefer to keep it simple in this case.

Captain's Log, Stardate 8879.4: It is the nature of the star service that change comes regularly. Crews rotate, ships are commissioned and decommissioned, cadets become ensigns and admiral retire. The ship's called Drake have seen their share, too, and today marks another one of their milestones - in the form of my trusted first officer moving on to a position that he will likely hold for the remainder of his career.

Sorak has been appointed to the rank of captain of engineering, and now stands as the portmaster for Eridani Shipyards. Commodore Santiago is lucky to have such an incredible technical and analytical mind overseeing construction of the next generation of Starfleet vessels. It was an honor to have him as my first officer; his presence will be missed.

I have named Lt. Cmdr. Tobin Les as my new first officer, and elevated Lt. Nikolai Kolesnikov to chief engineer. Lt. Sovar is following Sorak to Eridani Shipyards.

On a personal note, I will be taking a period of extended leave on Denobula while post-shakedown workups continue; Lt. Cmdr. Les will be acting-captain in my absence.

2E Rework of Character
  • Kept in this post until approved, at which point, we'll move the 1E character sheet here for posterity.
  • Since Zaranites have no 2E support yet, reskinning the 2E Talent 'Sensory Replacement' to act as 'Multispectrum Vision', the Species Ability for Zaranites.  Also, keeping Control/Fitness/Reason as the Species Stat Spread.

Lifepath
  • Species: Zaranite [Control/Fitness/Reason +1; "Multispectrum Vision" Species Ability]
  • Environment: Frontier Colony (Argus V) ["Exploration Over Tradition" Value; Fitness/Conn +1]
  • Upbringing: Science and Tech (Rebelled) [Daring/Engineering +1; Insight +2; Helm Operations Focus; Dauntless Talent]
  • Career: Command Track [Starfleet Officer Trait, "My Actions Must Serve the Crew" Value; Control/Daring/Presence +1; Conn +2; Engineering/Command +1; Astronavigation, Team Dynamics, Gambling Focuses; Collaboration: Conn Talent]
  • Experience: Experienced ["A First Step Always Involves Risk" Value; Technical Expertise Talent]
  • Career Events: Encountered a Truly Alien Being [Reason/Science +1; Exotic Particles Focus], Serious Injury [Fitness/Medicine +1; Composure Focus; Necessary Rebreather Trait]
  • Finishing Touches: ["The Ship is My Only Home" Value; Presence/Daring +1; Conn/Security +1; Reassuring Talent; Poker Pastime; Navigator Role]

VOSHEN
88 year old Zaranite male
Lieutenant, UFP Starfleet
Chief Navigator, U.S.S. Drake, NCC-2491
Command Department

Traits
Zaranite
Zaranites are hardy and immune to toxic gases, complications due to bright lighting, and can survive the extremes conditions of the vacuum of space, so long as their respirator tanks last. In general, Zaranites are pleasant if not somewhat reserved. In addition to their service in Starfleet, Zaranites also serve in various positions within the scientific community and diplomatic corps.

Multispectrum Vision
Zaranites can see a broader spectrum of light than most humanoid species, allowing them to visually detect electromagnetic radiation not in the standard range of visible light.

Starfleet Officer
A member of Starfleet, an officer committed to Starfleet's ideals of exploration, diplomacy, and scientific endeavor.

Necessary Rebreather
Whereas most Zaranites may remove their rebreather on their home planet or the confines of specialized quarters, an accident has left Voshen fully dependent on his rebreather at all times.  Without it, even his native fluoride gas would damage his respiratory organs inside of a few minutes.

Multispectrum Vision (Species Ability)
Zaranites can see a broader spectrum of light than most humanoid species. You gain the Multispectrum Vision trait, which represents the ways that your senses differ from those of other members of your species. Further, when you attempt a task to locate something hidden or concealed, or to detect details not normally perceptible to that sense, you may re-roll a single d20.

Dauntless
Whenever another character attempts to intimidate or threaten you, you may suffer 2 Stress to ignore their attempt.

Collaboration: Conn
Whenever an ally attempts a task using Conn, you may spend 1 Momentum (Immediate) to allow them to use your Conn rating and one of your relevant Focuses.

Technical Expertise
Whenever you attempt a task assisted by the ship's Computers or Sensors, you may re-roll one d20 in your pool, or you may allow the ship to re-roll its d20.

Reassuring
When you succeed at a task using your Presence, you may spend Momentum to reassure your allies, so long as they are able to hear you. You may spend 1 Momentum (Repeatable) to allow one ally who can see and hear you to recover 1 Stress. That ally may not recover more than 3 Stress from one use of this talent.

Role
Navigator
When you attempt a Science task related to astrophysics or stellar navigation, you may use your Conn rating instead of Science. When you attempt or Assist a Task to maneuver a starship through difficult or dangerous terrain, you may spend 1 Momentum to ignore a Complication suffered (Repeatable).
