Born: Day 372910 of the Zaranite Reckoning, Earth year 2200

General Description: Medium-build, about 1.78 meters in height,  Continually wears a Zaranite rebreather with developed fluorine reservoirs and a facemask with eye protection.  Wears a standard uniform without Zaranite familial decoration.  Gregarious and inquistive, his vocoder is pitched slightly higher than standard in a bid to sound more approachable.

Background
Voshen is the third son of three siblings.  His mother and father are employed as geothermal scientists within the Scientific Corps.  Devout in their belief in the numerology underpinning Zaranite psychohistory, they settled their family on Argus V, a far-flung isolated colony, after conferring with the mystics on their homeworld.  Voshen's childhood was spent exploring the cliffs surrounding his colony and dreaming about the motion of the stars behind the ash clouds of the planet.  As he grew into adolescence, his itinerant stargazing would take him farther from his home, begging passage from the occasional resupply shuttles and sometimes even stowing away.  His application to Starfleet came as a foregone conclusion, his parents long since given up in curtailing their son's wanderlust and he having given up on their orthodox beliefs that choked him more than any rebreather he would need on Earth.

Life at the Academy was fascinating, full of thousands of new faces and species.  With a hunger, Voshen leapt into his studies and quickly gained a reputation as a gregarious cadet and skilled pilot, if not a bit of a daredevil.  After a junior prank had him buzzing the academy grounds in a commandeered shuttlepod, Voshen was nearly expelled.  His flight privileges revoked, he realized how devastated he would be had he been forced to return home again to Argus V Colony.  He redoubled his efforts into his studies, promising to only engage any further risk-taking in service to his crew.  Forced to change focuses to Navigation, Voshen found the more intellectual field to be a pleasant change, charting stars and courses reminding him of nights spent at home under the stars.

The academic reprimands stalled Voshen's career out of the gate, but he quickly made up for lost time.  He made himself invaluable on every ship he was assigned to, not only as an astronavigator but as a friendly face and a dependable presence, especially around the poker table.  A small hiccup occurred in 2284 when aboard the USS Hawking, non-corporeal lifeforms infected his rebreather, taking control of his mind and driving him to nearly breach the warp core.  The crew rescued the ship and him in the nick of time, and he left the event humbled and with a strange but useful understanding of high-energy particles and their motions.

His career was nearly brought to a permanent halt on the surface of Eta Indi VII.  While on a routine shuttlecraft maneuvers, his shuttle was struck by a rogue gravitic eddy and crash-landed on the Class K planet.  His rebreather non-operable after the crash, Voshen survived for 18 hours, long enough to repair a distress signal, but not before irreparable damage was done to his lungs and respiratory tracts.  On medical leave, Starfleet doctors were able to refine his rebreather to give the specific gas combination his body could absorb, but he would be tied to the rebreather forever.  Sinking into a deep depression, unable to even return to his home, Voshen eventually pulled himself out of his despair by concentrating on returning to duty.  Making peace with his new disability, Voshen uses it as a motivation to become the cornerstone of any crew he is on.  After all, for better or worse, the ship is his home now.

Whenever an ally attempts a task using Conn, you may spend 1 Momentum (Immediate) to allow them to use your Conn rating and one of your relevant Focuses.

Technical Expertise
Whenever you attempt a task assisted by the ship's Computers or Sensors, you may re-roll one d20 in your pool, or you may allow the ship to re-roll its d20.

Reassuring
When you succeed at a task using your Presence, you may spend Momentum to reassure your allies, so long as they are able to hear you. You may spend 1 Momentum (Repeatable) to allow one ally who can see and hear you to recover 1 Stress. That ally may not recover more than 3 Stress from one use of this talent.

Voshen feels pretty confident in his piloting skills this mission, but thinks that he could've been more useful during the investigation itself.  He had a lot of opportunities to see and gather data, but didn't have the follow-through to act on it.

He'll use his Spotlight Milestone to trade his 'Dauntless' Talent for 'Quick Survey':

With the Normal Milestone choice, he'll sidegrade his 'Gambling' Focus for 'Cold Reading'.  Taking his lessons from long nights at the poker table and applying them to the frustrations of not being able to read Kavoran at the interrogation.

Lt. Voshen's rebreather motors whirred as they reset and in a moment, twin clouds of Vulcan sand ejected from each respirator. He breathed in lungfuls of fresh fluorine as he waited for the spots in front of his eyes to clear.  After a few moments, he was able to stand on his own again.

"Doctor, once again, I find myself in your debt.  I apologize for my misattention.  With the investigation and the excitement at the monastery...well, it wasn't the breathtaking introduction to Vulcan scenery I was expecting."

"Your ministrations were sufficient," the doctor responds. "And he will recover fully, in part thanks to your quick thinking and the monastery physician's initial treatment. If I didn't know any better, I'd wager she picked up some of her skills from Starfleet."

"Ah, then perhaps a change in career is in order?  To be certain...I have spent more time in Sickbay...than on the Bridge at this moment.  Tell me, Doctor, do you feel...that...that..."  Voshen found the doctor tilting up at him and placed a hand out to stop him, the Tellarite's weight pressing into his chest like a vise.  Blinking rapidly, he saw that it was himself that was leaning heavily on Dr. Dourap.  His legs felt leaden and the bright Vulcan sun seemed to obliterate his field of vision in a sea of white spots.

"Doctor, hnnn...perhaps, hnnn...w-we had, hnnnn..."  The rejoinder was bitten off in a trailing wheeze.

OOC: Voshen's not been completely honest with the Doc and is suffering the analogue of an asthma attack due to his new reagent levels being off.  I'm willing to walk the severity of this back a bit.  Wanted to introduce a bit of a roadblock for him and a reason to re-bond with the doctor, but I also don't want to introduce a twist that would stretch believability of his being allowed to serve as a chief helmsman with a health condition.  Either way, feeling that this is just a temporary "getting the levels right" issue with his rebreather.  Although I'm not against future complications on it!

After the third adjustment of his uniform's stifling collar, Lt. Voshen excused himself to find a private spot out of doors.  Fresh air was out of the question, but often focusing on a far horizon would see him through episodes like this.  His lungs radiated with a steady burn and he slowed his respirations out of long practice.

Nearly bowling over a small form in his distraction, he looked down to see the Drake's stout physician and saw a measure of his own weariness mirrored there.  Schooling his expression beneath his mask, he crossed his arms and placed his back against the cool wall, effecting a smile.

"My good doctor.  I am well.  Although, truth to be told, I will be more than content to leave the arid Vulcanian atmosphere behind us.  The warmth is a boon, but the dryness.  It..."  He cleared his throat.  "I must have a kilogram of sand lodged in my filters.  But enough about my mild discomforts.  How does Mr. Spunkmeyer fare?  Hopefully better under your ministrations than mine."

Lt. Voshen considered the dismantled device in front of him, its control PADD blinking idly.  At the end of the hours, it was simply black-market technology.  Accessible through specious means, assembled with the precision of a determined madman. 

He found his thoughts of conspiracy suddenly foolish.  Somehow, shadowy cabals and religious assassins were more palatable than the simple hate of one murderous Vulcan.  He swallowed a bitterness in his mouth.

Lt. Kolesnikov watched him askance.  "Anything more to see here?"

"I certainly hope not."  Voshen switched off the power and the PADD went dark.

With the main thrust of the case finishing up behind him, Voshen left the interrogation chamber, moving towards Main Engineering.  Some time later, Voshen and Lt. Kolesnikov both looked down at the seemingly innocuous device on a workbench reserved for fine mechanism repair and troubleshooting.

"The simplicity of this device cuts two ways.  It can transport using pre-programmed destinations.  But, without a large amount of resident memory, it needs depend on a source for those destinations.  Our suspect may have been resourceful enough to attempt this alone from the remove of the monastery, but if there were accomplices in the planetary transporter grid or elsewhere, that is information it would prudent to gather before the resolution of the case."

Voshen concentrated on Kavoran's raised posture on the monitors, but no new insights came.  His tapered fingers drummed pensively against his arms.

"Captain, permission to further analyze the suspect's transporter device?  If there is a lead to be followed there, I would like to get ahead of it."  He turned towards ch'Valk and Sorak, steepled his fingers, and bowed slightly.  "Ensign, Commander.  If either of you would be amenable to turn your ethical examinations into mechanical ones, it would be most welcome."
