STRESS 9

Introduced: 1.7, Featured: 1.11

NOTES
Sonek is the son of Commander Sorak  (Chief Engineer of USS Drake) and V'Kor Investigator T'Kiri. He followed his father into Starfleet when he was old enough, but remained true to himself by sticking to scientific study rather than the more practical applications his father prefers.

Sonek had a bit of trouble integrating at the Academy until he got over his own stiffness and learned to relax a bit. His field assignment aboard the Drake has been both his greatest experience (being out there on the front lines) and his worst fear (being stuck in his father's shadow). Either way, Sonek is determined to serve with distinction, regardless of the lighting.

Arc Milestone (from Cole, Ep. 2.01) -- Command +1

NOTES
Human Attribute Bonuses: Fitness, Insight, Reason

David Lear is a Starfleet orphan, originally born on Starbase 2 to parents in the space service. David's father was among the crew of the Defiant that succumbed to interphasic space madness in 2268, presumably murdered by one of his shipmates; his mother was on temporary assignment to the Epsilon IX station when it was attacked and digitized by the V'Ger entity in 2273.

The rest of David's formative years were spent in western Nebraska, on Earth, with his maternal grandparents; his grandfather, a retired Starfleet commander in his own right (and veteran of the Axanar Peace Mission), helped David overcome his loss and encouraged him to apply to the Academy when he was old enough.

David graduated from Starfleet Academy in 2283. He spent a short tour at Tranquility Base shipyards before transferring to USS Drake in 2285.

He demonstrated a knack for identifying medical issues by scent and touch alone, and rose to the rank of chief petty officer in only 6 years. He has proved himself a capable trauma assistant to all of the Drake's surgeons.

NOTES
Edosian Attributes: +1 Control, +1 Daring, +1 Reason

Olodon was born on Edos to an urban family, the fourth of 15 children. His father a computer specialist and his mother an education administrator, Olodon was expected to focus on education. Instead, he fell in love with athletics, and came to enjoy orienteering and overland sports.

Though he still excelled in his academic studies, Olodon decided to apply to the Edosian Military Academy and was accepted as an officer candidate. He graduated in 2286 and entered Edosian military service as a scout officer; the following year, he was selected for a transfer to Starfleet, where he was placed in security and assigned to USS Drake.

Olodon isn't sure about this shipboard duty thing, but he wants to represent his people and the Edosian military well.

Traditionally, even though they have surnames (which are, more specifically, clan names), Edosians in Starfleet are identified by their given names.

Introduced: 1.12, Featured: 2.01, 2.02

NOTES
Thadis is a typical member of the Dra clan on Andoria, who are known for their continued grudge against the Vulcans for injustices suffered in their 22nd Century conflicts. As such, few ever pursue a career in Starfleet.

While young, however, Thadis was discovered to have a strong aptitude for the sciences, and Astronomy specifically, and was encouraged in his schooling to attempt the more prestigious career. To his amazement, he was accepted to the Academy, and immediately had to bury his dislike of Vulcans, as his first roommate was one. He has since learned to hide his distaste behind a veneer of professionalism...mostly because he won't give those green goblins the satisfaction of seeing him crack.

(This is to say he's merely cool and dispassionate when dealing with Vulcans; he's professional, and gracious when needed, never withholding praise from junior officers (V'Las) out of spite. He will also not voice or act on his prejudices without extreme provocation.)

Born in the rural north of England, Ally Banks spent many hours of her youth staring up at the running lights of ships streaking against the night sky. Determined to go "up there," she enlisted in Starfleet upon completing her O and A level assessments (which included a two-year stint at York College), and followed a career path that suited her physicality. After a year in training, her first assignment was station security at Starbase 11; in early 2288, she transferred to USS Drake and has since gained the notice (for good or ill) of the senior staff.

She's been dating Robert "Bobby" Indigwe-Krane, Commodore Krane's grandson, since early 2288. The commodore is unaware of the pairing.

NOTES
Human Attribute Bonuses: Control, Daring, Insight
Appearance: Athletic African-American man of medium height. Hair kept short; clean shaven.

Gerald Fryling grew up in rural Alabama, where his parents were veterinarians at the regional preserve. He grew up reciting the taxonomic names of animals as soon as he could talk - his mother swears his first word was lemur catta - and he spent most summers helping out around the preserve or his parents' clinic. It didn't hurt that he met his childhood sweetheart there, a girl from Legion who also volunteered at the preserve during the summer months.

He excelled in sports in school and graduated near the top of the his class. He spent weeks trying to figure out what to do next when his girlfriend told him she was applying to Starfleet Academy and thought he'd have a chance to get in. As it turned out, Gerald got in, but his girlfriend didn't; upset, she broke up with him the day he left for San Francisco. (It didn't last; they were back together by the time he returned home for his first leave period.)

Gerald tested high in tactics and defensive systems, and chose to follow the security department curriculum. His cadet cruise was on the Miranda-class cruiser USS Fox, where he performed admirably and earned graduating honors. Upon his graduation in 2287, Fryling and his girlfriend married, and he was assigned to USS Drake as a shift security officer.

(Bonus Options from Advanced Team Dynamics: 2.02)

NOTES
Appearance: Tall for a Tellarite, but otherwise unremarkable features (more of a STIV-style than earlier or later depictions)

BACKGROUND
Ratzmuridan "Ratz" Dourop was born into a large family in 2257, the youngest of seven children of Ageromosh Dourap, a certified accountant on Tellar, and his medical administrator wife, Goonoori. Brilliant even by his famiily's overachieving standards, Ratz was fast-tracked into a a rigorous academic program. His days and nights were filled with studies; while it had the desired effect of preparing the young Tellarite for his chosen career, it also deprived him of any form of childhood. As a result, all he knew was that he was the smartest Tellarite in the room and he acted accordingly.

Finishing his collegiates by the age of 14, Ratz entered medical university, graduating with a degree in alien medicine (with human specialty) within three years. He was then old enough to apply for Starfleet Academy and was accepted immediately. Even there, Ratz considered himself the smartest being in the room, backed up by stellar academic performance and praise from his instructors. However, he frequently found himself in heated arguments with his classmates; although none ever came to blows, Ratz slowly ostracized himself from his fellow cadets as bad blood and grudges began to form.

Dourap graduated from Starfleet Academy in 2277, again in three years, while simultaneously completing his internship at the academy hospital. His bedside manner was, frankly, atrocious, and his superiors recommended him for research duty. Dourap found himself first at a Vulcan Science Academy medical research station in Vulcana Regar, where he spent a couple months earning his Vulcan internal medicine residency (about the maximum length of time his superiors could tolerate him interacting with patients); he then transferred to Denobula as part of the Federation Medical Exchange.

Following a two-year stint at Starfleet Medical on Earth (where he completed his Andorian specialty and further alienated his colleagues with his frequent correction of diagnoses), Ratz was transferred to Starbase 11 in 2284 as the senior research medical officer, where he reunited with one of his few close friends, Lt. Cmdr. John Farrell. In early 2287, while Ratz was off duty, he encountered a coolant leak near the personnel section of the starbase. Without regard to personal safety and relying on his innate resistance to toxins, the doctor rushed in to find his friend slumped over his desk, unconscious. Ratz removed Farrell from the area and performed life-saving first aid.

Ratz was decorated for his heroism, and Farrell offered to do anything to repay him. Dourap's only wish was to actually get posted to a ship. His friend and ally obliged, assigning Ratz to USS Drake as she was en route to a survey mission beyond Caitian space. After spending a couple months acclimating to the ship and shadowing Lt. Hunter (whom he replaced), Ratz stepped full time into his new role as an attending physician. Following Dr. Welch's retirement, he was assigned as chief surgeon of the Drake.

Ratz's eldest sibling is Barnangor Dourap, a member of a regional judicial commission on Tellar.

Appearance: Light-skinned African-American man of medium height. Shaven head, pencil-thin mustache.

Small towns aren't supposed to have multiple acceptances to Starfleet Academy; those are the kinds of places where that once in a century phenom gets their big break and makes it to the big time. In the 1900s, it would've been making it into major league sports. In the 23rd Century, it's Starfleet Academy, where acceptance means you're one of the top half percent of the one percent.

So, when Calum O'Neil was accepted by the Academy two years after his 2nd cousin Gerald Fryling, the whole region was in disbelief. And the ensuing party lasted three weeks across three counties.

Calum's adolescent interests gravitated toward the martial, but, like Gerald, he had a fine mind with an affinity for forensics at the Academy. While he graduated in the middle of his class, his top marks in the investigative sciences were noticed. It was a personal request from Gerald to Captain Treyva that got Calum posted to the Drake.
