Quote from: Davy, aka GM on May 07, 2024, 02:26:14 PMNahwoor reads the information on the PADD and hands it back to T'Kiri. "I do. What sort of electronics do you seek? We use very little technology here, and nearly all of our devices are housed in our medical and administrative buildings."

"I rather doubt the device in question will be found among legitimate equipment, but it is possible," Tobin replies. "It's small enough to fit in the palm of one's hand, so it could escape others' notice."

Tobin hurries through the open gate and doubles over to catch his breath for a moment. Upon straightening up, he catches T'Kiri's eye and gives her a grateful nod.

"That's enough of Vulcan weather to last me for a good while," he says wryly as he gingerly touches the reddened skin of his face and neck.

Tobin unclenches and exhales as the shuttle sets down. "Well, that certainly was interesting," he says quietly, before standing up to retrieve a cloak from the gear Voshen brought along.

"Looks like even the monks don't want to be out in this weather," he notes drily as he shrugs into the protective clothing. "There's no sentry. I just hope they open up for us."

"I'm quite familiar with that feeling," Tobin says as he takes a seat. He absently rubs his replaced knee. "Don't get me started on warp drive containment fields."

"Agreed," the science officer replies. "I must admit our suspect has been a quite clever antagonist."

As they board the shuttle, Tobin notes the extra desert provisions. "Good thinking, gentlemen. Never hurts to be prepared." The Trill extends his hand to each of the newcomers in human fashion. "You two must be some of the new crewmembers. Seems that you're getting tossed in the fire right away. I'm Lt. Cmdr. Tobin Les, chief science officer."

Quote from: Davy, aka GM on April 04, 2024, 04:42:31 PMThe device is described in detail, and images show it to be easily concealed in the palm. With this information, Tobin suspects they can find it if it's within two meters of a tricorder.

At this point, their communicator beeps, and T'Kiri announces she has obtained a warrant to search the monastery premises; however, two complications have arose: First, V'Kor leadership will not allow it's personnel to conduct the investigation, to avoid any potential sectarian "aggravation," meaning the Starfleet task force has to execute the warrant; second, the region around the monastery has just come under a transporter blackout due to a major sandstorm, and will not be accessible for at least two days. Given that the warrant expires in one star day, a shuttle is necessary to access the site. T'Kiri has been authorized to observe the search as part of the task force, but she is prohibited from participating.

"Well, it's not every day we get to take a shuttle through a sandstorm, Mr. Cole," Tobin says as he programs the device's description into his tricorder. "It ought to be interesting, at least. And there's a silver lining -- if we're right about Kavoran, the storm should at least keep him from attempting any anonymous transporter trips until we get down there."

"Certainly, Lieutenant. Let's see what we can find on our mysterious code."

OOC: I think Cole's probably the guy for this, Cole. Tobin can assist if that sounds good to you.

Tobin explains his findings to the others. "These middle digits could be a programmer's signature code, or perhaps the unintended byproduct of the use of some sort of device. Either way, it does further demonstrate that these TAICs are all related. I suggest we do some research on Kavoran and his fellow monks to see if any of them have backgrounds that would suggest the skills necessary to pull something like this off. And perhaps, given this new information, the Vulcan authorities would be amenable to searching the monastery for additional evidence showing who our suspect might be."
#12
"Indeed, the evidence is so far circumstantial," Tobin replies to Asha. "Another monk could theoretically be responsible, but between his access to the weapon and a documented history of dispute with advocates of tuSurak ... well, I suppose you can call it a hunch."

The Trill scientist turns to T'Kiri. "And that is an excellent question, Principal Investigator. Let's see if there's anything to be gleaned from the data."

OOC: I'd like to look for any sort of signature that ties the anomalous tags together. I don't think Chief Science Officer applies to this situation, so I'll spend that last Momentum if not.

OOC: Sorry guys, had a busy weekend. I'd like to use Tobin's free Obtain Information to answer Sorak's question on the personal identities (I'd forgotten all about that!).
#14
"This does seem to bear out my suspicions," Tobin says, after the anomalous logs are identified. "And my initial readings after the attack on Sorak's parents also make more sense now. Our perpetrator is bouncing their transporter signal around the planetary network using old ID codes."

OOC: Well, that seems pretty damning. Does the data bear out that the departures/arrivals at the monastery are the first/last of the anomalous codes in each incident? (Spending a Momentum if needed.)

It seems like the next course of action will have to be what Renny suggested, regarding having the authorities seize evidence from the monastery. I think we should also work to establish whether Kavoran is capable of manipulating the transporter codes, or is associated with someone who could.
